Your Team Responsibilities

MSCI is a leading provider of decision-support tools and services for the global investment community. With over 50 years of expertise in research, data, and technology, we power better investment decisions through our indexes, analytics, and ESG and climate products. Our Data Operations & Technology function collects, validates, quality-assures, and delivers the data that underpins every MSCI product — spanning ESG, climate, sustainability, corporate governance, geospatial, and private-assets data across thousands of companies and assets worldwide.

MSCI is transforming its data operations through an agentic AI operating model — replacing manual, human-driven workflows with intelligent, autonomous agents that collect, validate, and quality-assure data at scale. As a Data Engineer, you build the automation that makes this possible: you design, engineer, and deploy the AI agents, orchestration, and data pipelines that operations teams run every day, taking each solution from concept through to a reliable, production-grade system. You architect, engineer, integrate, and deploy large-scale market-data solutions across MSCI’s multi-asset-class products — Analytics, Sustainability, Climate, Index, and Private Assets — collaborating with product, data-content, and infrastructure teams in a fast-paced Agile environment.

The CDP API team is building the Centralized Data Platform Data Marketplace — the API-first distribution layer that turns MSCI's data into a modern, self-service product. Our mission is to make MSCI's datasets discoverable, subscribable, and consumable programmatically, so a quant developer, a portfolio manager working in Excel, or an AI agent can find the right data and start using it in minutes rather than weeks.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement core authentication and authorization: the POST /auth/token endpoint, JWT validation middleware, and the entitlement enforcement layer governing dataset, field, and channel-level access.
  • Build and maintain the entitlement decision cache (Redis/Memorystore) to keep authorization checks under a sub-10ms overhead target, including invalidation on entitlement changes.
  • Standardize API error handling (401/403/429) with correlated request IDs in a uniform error envelope, and configure Apigee for auth pass-through, tier-based rate limiting, and rate-limit header propagation.
  • Develop catalog APIs (GET /catalog/datasets, /catalog/datasets/{id}, /catalog/search) with entitled metadata exposure and full-text/faceted search, backed by a resilient descriptor cache.
  • Build core data access endpoints (GET /data/{dataset_id}, POST /data/{dataset_id}/query, GET /data/{dataset_id}/sample) along with a shared cursor-pagination and query-filter executor supporting large result sets.
  • Implement both synchronous and asynchronous read paths through the Query Accelerator, covering small/recent queries as well as bulk export and deep-history jobs (submission, status, delivery).
  • Implement non-blocking usage-event emission and the GET /usage/me summary endpoint, and build the MCP tool-definition generator kept in sync with the OpenAPI contract via CI.
  • Contribute to API design during discovery, including the OpenAPI v1 contract, query/pagination grammar, auth/entitlement architecture, and MCP tool-definition and usage-event schemas.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) — mandatory. Hands-on experience building and deploying services on GCP is required for this role. Familiarity with Cloud Run, IAM, Cloud Logging/Monitoring, and GCP networking (PSC/VPC) expected.
  • Strong core Java (17+) and modern JVM development; Quarkus (or Spring Boot with willingness to work in Quarkus) on the JVM.
  • REST API design and implementation; OpenAPI/contract-first development.
  • Automated testing discipline — unit tests written alongside code as definition-of-done; comfort with contract and integration testing.
  • CI/CD pipelines and containerised deployment.
  • AI-agent-first software development model. Ability and willingness to work within our AI-agent-first development approach: using agentic development platforms and AI coding assistants as the primary way of building, and using AI-assistant models for design and specification work, not just code generation. Developers are expected to direct, review, and refine agent-produced work rather than hand-write everything from scratch.
