A junior to mid-level lawyer based in MSCI’s Singapore office, with a sub-regional commercial legal role, but with a heavy emphasis on supporting the South Asia and Australia/New Zealand sales teams and offices (Singapore, Sydney, Mumbai, Manila).
This position will provide legal support to the local sub-regional sales team for all their licensing and sales deals and handle all other third-party agreements related to our local operations. This includes a variety of license and other direct and indirect sales agreements, as well as vendor agreements. The agreements cover index and data licensing, some software licensing, and ESG- and Real Assets-related products and solutions. In addition, this position will assist with the handling of compliance matters, as well as a variety of corporate work for our local legal entities, and will work closely with other functions in the firm, including Sales, Finance, and Regulatory Affairs. Finally, this position will also handle extensive overflow work from other parts of the APAC region.
The candidate will need to have experience working in an international or multi-national company while dealing with both Asian and Western clients and handling an array of international deals under US law, Common Law, and local law. Experience with licensing and corporate matters is a must. Having prior experience with compliance work is a bonus. Having a good basic understanding of financial products and markets is recommended. Interpersonal skills are required, as well having the mental toughness to protect the interests of the firm in an often challenging and high-pressure environment. The candidate will need to be a self-starter and be able to work fairly independently, while having the discretion to know when to escalate matters to their manager. As most of the firm’s business is conducted in English, fluency and the ability to practice law in English is a must. Some knowledge of spoken Japanese or other Asian languages is a plus, but not a requirement. Three to six years experience practicing law, either in a law firm or in an international company, and a law degree from a reputable law school (JD or equivalent) are required. The candidate has to be admitted to a Bar or Law Society (or local equivalent) and be in good standing.
