Your Team Responsibilities

MSCI ESG Research is the global standard for sustainability-related signals, data, and insights. We provide in-depth research, ratings, and analysis of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG)-related business practices of thousands of companies worldwide. Our research offers critical insights to help institutional investors identify risks and opportunities that traditional investment research may overlook.

One of our team’s core responsibilities is to leverage data science to support ESG Ratings for companies and provide actionable insights. We are committed to advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the ESG field, enabling our clients and investors to turn data into meaningful insights that guide their decision-making.

Your Key Responsibilities

Your role as a data scientist will involve collaborating with a diverse team of analysts across multiple locations to advance the integration of AI and data science within ESG Ratings. The focus of the role includes leveraging AI-driven tools and models to analyze companies, enhance existing research frameworks, and build new models that derive actionable insights from diverse data sources. You will also be able to contribute to regular publications on AI-enhanced analytical insights related to companies, industry trends, and ESG themes, presenting complex findings in clear, impactful ways. This role also involves meeting with clients to discuss research themes, demonstrate the depth of our ESG ratings model, and showcase how AI applications can further enrich their understanding. Our team brings together analysts from various backgrounds, fostering a collaborative environment of learning, sharing, and innovation to enhance expertise and efficiency in the ESG research space.

  • Proven experience in data science, with strong skills in Python and proficiency in large language models and AI solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to think proactively and innovatively, applying AI to derive meaningful insights for the sustainability field.
  • Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams, with a focus on applying AI to improve operational efficiency in research.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to transform complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Collaborate within a wide range of teams (industry analysts, equity research, multi-asset class research, climate change risk research, index, analytics) to produce innovative analytical models.
  • Continuously improve how we think, how we model sustainability related risks, and how we develop solutions for investors globally.

Your skills and experience that will help you excel

  • 2-3 years of experience in data mining, modeling, and coding, with a strong interest in integrating ESG and sustainability research into mainstream investment processes.
  • A critical thinker with attention to detail and proficiency in Python, ideally experienced in conducting deep-dive analyses using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLM).
  • Experience working with diverse information sources (e.g., lengthy annual reports, websites, quantitative data feeds, web crawlers) and types of data (e.g., quantitative data, key performance indicators, prose narratives) across various subjects (e.g., financial risk, corporate governance, sustainability), using multiple analysis methods (e.g., rules-based, subjective analysis, written summaries).
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, diverse global team environment
